The Author

I’m an entrepreneur, author, speaker and podcaster.

I am author of six books, including the global best-seller “How to be a Productivity Ninja”, and “How to be a Study Ninja”.

I’m also the founder of Think Productive, one of the world’s leading providers of personal productivity training and consultancy, with offices in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.

With a mission to revolutionise stuffy time management courses, Think Productive launched in April 2009 and has earned rave reviews from the likes of British Airways, The Cabinet Office, eBay, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Barclays Commercial Bank for its practical, ‘at-desk coaching’ approach.

I’m also the popular business podcast, “Beyond Busy”, which explores the issues of productivity, work/life balance and how people define happiness in their lives, profiling interesting people from Olympic gold medallists to tech entrepreneurs to clowns.

Away from productivity, my background and other big passion is for the charity sector. I am a co-founder of Intervol, an international student volunteering charity. Previous roles include Chief Executive of Student Volunteering England, Head of Volunteering at the University of Birmingham and an advisor to the UK Government on youth volunteering policy.

Despite an intolerance of failure elsewhere in my life, I am an Aston Villa season ticket holder and an avid follower of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team.

Leadership and Self Deception

Author: The Arbinger Institute
About

You might think you are a people person. But do you really treat others well? And how can you improve your dealings with those around you?

Be prepared to have your world turned upside down and open your eyes to a whole new way of living and working.

Through a series of entertaining stories, this astonishing book will show you how most of us are not fulfilling our potential – in our personal lives and at work – because of ‘self-deception’. It will show you how to escape your box of self-deception, and change for the better in a lasting way:

* Don’t focus on what others are doing wrong. Do focus on what you can do to help

* Don’t worry whether others are helping you. Do worry whether you are helping others

* Don’t try to be perfect. Do try to be better.

By following this book’s advice, you can deepen your personal happiness, strengthen your relationships, improve your leadership skills, build teamwork – and increase your success in everything you choose to pursue.

The Author

Founded in 1979, the Arbinger Institute has helped thousands of individuals, teams, and organizations achieve breakthrough results by making the one change that most dramatically improves performance, sparks collaboration, and accelerates innovation: a shift from the default self-focus of an “inward mindset” to the others-inclusive results-focus of an “outward mindset.” Arbinger’s training and consulting programs are specifically designed to facilitate this change.

Early on, Arbinger’s growth was fueled solely by clients who spread the word about Arbinger’s impact. Arbinger’s public profile was dramatically increased by the global success of its first book, Leadership & Self Deception, which was published in 2000. The book quickly became a word-of-mouth bestseller. It is now available in 27 languages and has sold over a million copies.

Arbinger’s second international bestseller, The Anatomy of Peace, was published in 2006. Available in 14 languages and having sold more than 500,000 copies to date, The Anatomy of Peace demonstrates the power of Arbinger’s work in resolving conflict.

Arbinger’s newest book, The Outward Mindset, shares the true and compelling stories of individual leaders and client organizations. Through these examples and simple yet profound guidance and tools, the book enables individuals and organizations to shift to an outward mindset.

Arbinger is recognized as a world leader in improving organizational effectiveness and in conflict resolution. Arbinger’s clients range from individuals who are seeking help in their lives to many of the largest companies and governmental institutions in the world.

The Adventures of a Care Entrepreneur

Author: Samuel Barrington
About

This book, like most books, tells a story. More accurately, it tells the first part of a story. It’s the story of how I went from a personal crisis – redundancy and having my mortgage offer withdrawn, to setting up and running a leading care quality consultancy. It’s intended to be the first book of a series, entitled ‘The Adventures of a Care Entrepreneur’ and will cover the first five years. That part, the beginning, is the part of the process I get asked about most. The scary part. The part where you go from having a set salary which arrives on a set day every month, to launching yourself into the great unknown. What is now a nationwide network of care improvement associates and the first UK care consultancy to successfully start franchising, began with me, on my own, sitting at my kitchen table on a laptop. Of course, there’s been some good fortune in that journey, but hopefully there are parts of my experience which may be useful to others. In particular, those involved in the care sector or who find themselves in the same position I did in 2016; about to leave the relative safety of a job and taking their first, tentative steps across the choppy waters of self-employment. I sometimes think of it like that, like crossing a river. The first part is to be brave enough to step off the bank. After that, you’re looking for stepping-stones, but the truth is that most of those stones won’t appear until your foot is already in the air. In so many ways, that first step is the most important. Boldness has magic in it.

The Culture Code

Author: Daniel Coyle
About

Where does great culture come from? How do you build and sustain it in your group, or strengthen a culture that needs fixing?

In The Culture Code, Daniel Coyle goes inside some of the world’s most successful organizations—including the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team Six, IDEO, and the San Antonio Spurs—and reveals what makes them tick. He demystifies the culture-building process by identifying three key skills that generate cohesion and cooperation, and explains how diverse groups learn to function with a single mind. Drawing on examples that range from Internet retailer Zappos to the comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade to a daring gang of jewel thieves, Coyle offers specific strategies that trigger learning, spark collaboration, build trust, and drive positive change. Coyle unearths helpful stories of failure that illustrate what not to do, troubleshoots common pitfalls, and shares advice about reforming a toxic culture. Combining leading-edge science, on-the-ground insights from world-class leaders, and practical ideas for action, The Culture Code offers a roadmap for creating an environment where innovation flourishes, problems get solved, and expectations are exceeded.

Culture is not something you are—it’s something you do. The Culture Code puts the power in your hands. No matter the size of your group or your goal, this book can teach you the principles of cultural chemistry that transform individuals into teams that can accomplish amazing things together.

Praise for The Culture Code

Do you remember the last major initiative you watched die in your organization? Did it go down with a loud crash? Or was it slowly and quietly suffocated by other competing priorities? By the time it finally disappeared, it&;s likely no one even noticed. What happened?

Often, the answer is that the &;whirlwind&; of urgent activity required to keep things running day-to-day devoured all the time and energy you needed to invest in executing your strategy for tomorrow. The 4 Disciplines of Execution can change that forever.

The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) is a simple, repeatable, and proven formula for executing your most important strategic priorities in the midst of the whirlwind. By following the 4 Disciplines&;Focus on the Wildly Important; Act on Lead Measures; Keep a Compelling Scoreboard; Create a Cadence of Accountability&;leaders can produce breakthrough results, even when executing the strategy requires a significant change in behavior from their teams.

4DX is not theory. It is a proven set of practices that have been tested and refined by hundreds of organizations and thousands of teams over many years. When a company or an individual adheres to these disciplines, they achieve superb results, regardless of the goal. 4DX represents a new way to think and work that is essential to thriving in today’s competitive climate. Speak Out!

Author: Duncan Lews
About

If there is one thing I have learned from Covid-19, it has been the need for clear, honest and authentic verbal communication. This has been, in part, the catalyst for writing my first book ‘Speak Out! How to Make an Emotional Connection in Communication’.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the myriad of ways in which people communicate with each other. While academia was never my strongest point growing up, my thirst for knowledge in this subject reached a peak in 2010. As a mature student, I embarked on an exciting – if daunting – voyage of discovery by undertaking a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Management at York St John University. Over a three year period, I became engrossed by leadership styles and, specifically, how different leaders communicate their verbal messages.

Although they are often referred to as soft skills, there is nothing soft about these essential skills. Prior to the current pandemic, all Eaglei’s training delivery was face to face. Since March, we have adapted our approach and now offer the same experience online using a variety of video platforms, with clients recognising the requirement to embrace technology and use virtual platforms more effectively. In this new normal, people realise they have to up their game.

Central to our approach to training and development is to empower individuals to communicate and present the best version of themselves. By delivering practical, interactive training, we work in depth with clients to explore their authenticity and how to make an emotional connection with an audience; something we refer to as the Human Element. Inspiring our clients – leader, manager, apprentice or student – to make a lasting difference in their job or career is key to our innovative approach.

I believe that all too often we make a clear distinction between the personality we show at home and work. The key question is why? After all it is you, the same person: different skills and emotions are used and displayed in both environments, but it is still you. Of course, the words we speak are important. But, in essence, it is not so much what you say as how you say it and how this is received. Personal presence is the experience that people have of you and the message they will take away. More often than not, I believe that it is fear or extreme nerves that prevents us from showing who you are: fear of saying the wrong thing, something stupid or just not being listened to or taken seriously.

It is this requirement for genuine, verbal communication that I explore in my new book. It is essentially about my approach and methodology to what I do for a living.
